“Loving” Album Artwork Case Study

Around the time I was designing the shirts and stickers for my band, Anyone Anyway (you can view the shirts here, and listen to the band here), we needed actual album artwork for the EP. Months prior, when we decided we’d like to do something floral, I had taken a few photos in the Swan Point cemetery in Providence, RI that we thought could represent the music really well (below).

We originally had wanted to use this photo for shirts so I had come up with a few variations with different colors and a few different fonts, like Times New Roman, Frente H1, and American Typewriter. I tried taking colors for the fonts from the photos themselves to make the two graphic elements mesh, and add cohesion.

After showing all the variations to everyone else in the band, we decided on Times New Roman with the picture of white flowers, but we wanted to try a few more things. Still pulling colors from the photo itself, we tried using dulled, modest, purple instead of the bright, and lively cyan. Again, I came up with a few different variations and brought them to the rest of the band.

Once we decided on a shade of purple and decided on a name for the EP, we sat together to work out placement and spacing of the words. The final product came out to look like this:

LOVING-01

When the idea of having the album being presented on several hard copy platforms, I had to come up with something for the back of the record. Because branding is so important, I decided to take the flowers used on the shirts and stickers and have it incorporated. With that idea came these:
